"The winter of discontent" Shakespeare Richard III Soliloquy at a urinal! (Richard Loncraine, 1995)
Просмотров 139Месяц назад
Unexpected and abrupt change of scenery where Richard is offering us the famous "Now is the winter of our discontent” speech relocate from the grand setting of a radio address from the palace to the slightly less salubrious setting of a row of gent's urinals.
Disabled by Wilfred Owen (from Benediction [2021] by Terence Davies)

Disabled by Wilfred Owen He sat in a wheeled chair, waiting for dark, And shivered in his ghastly suit of grey, Legless, sewn short at elbow. Through the park Voices of boys rang saddening like a hymn, Voices of play and pleasure after day, Till gathering sleep had mothered them from him. * * * * * About this time Town used to swing so gay When glow-lamps budded in the light-blue trees, And gir...

The Image: That huge chamber; the crowns; the regalia; the new woven flag representing the dual monarchy of England and France - the notion of Great Kings being the 'makers of manners'. It's all here... I love this clip. (Though obviously very politically incorrect - having a beautiful young princess being delivered as part of the spoils of war!) When Branagh smilingly advises Kate: 'Take me/Ta...

The film begins with Chorus, in this case a person in modern dress, introducing the subject of the play. He is walking through an empty film studio and ends his monologue by opening the doors to begin the main action. Chorus reappears several times during the film, his speeches helping to explain and progress the action.
as it grew dark [ref-Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte] (1983) composed by Paul Lansky

[I am incredibly honoured that eminent American composer, Paul Lansky himself has personally given me permission to use his audio and has even said that my video is 'lovely' (!)] This video is based on Paul Lansky's astonishing electronic rendering of a passage from Jane Eyre where Jane is explaining to Mr Rochester a Gothic-type dream she has experienced that seems to foretell the destruction ...

Nice day. Nice day I agreed. I am a Quaker she said and Sunday I was moved in silence to speak a poem loudly for racial brotherhood. I was thoughtful, then said what poem came on like that? One the mo...
'Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night' by Dylan Thomas from Interstellar 2014 by Christopher Nolan

Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night Do not go gentle into that good night, Old age should burn and rave at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light. Though wise men at their end know dark is right, Because their words had forked no lightning they Do not go gentle into that good night. Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright Their frail deeds might have danced in a green b...

We are not now that strength which in old days Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are; One equal temper of heroic hearts, Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

If you were a bird, and lived on high, You’d lean on the wind when the wind came by. You’d say to the wind when it took you away, That’s where I wanted to go today! Where am I going? I don’t quite know, What does it matter where people go? Down to the wood where the bluebells grow, Anywhere, anywhere, I don’t know.

I see them standing at the formal gates of their colleges, I see my father strolling out under the ochre sandstone arch, the red tiles glinting like bent plates of blood behind his head, I see my mother with a few light books at her hip standing at the pillar made of tiny bricks, the wrought-iron gate still open behind her, its sword-tips aglow in the May air, they are about to graduate, they a...
